Jim Ciaccio is one of the many "Resident Experts" that fishes on Second Avenue Pier on almost a daily basis. He's been fishing at the Pier for about 30 years now. He also enjoys shore casting, and has been featured in local news stories. His "Surf Fishing Tips" were published in the Sun News on September 19, 2006. The largest fish that Jim has caught at Second Avenue Pier was a Black Tip Shark weighing about 200 pounds. He was fishing for Flounder with live bait on 17 pound test. It took him almost an hour to land this monster. We asked Jim to give us some tips for beginners and novice Pier fishermen.
"I recommend that you fish straight down and use shrimp and mullet for bait. In early Spring, we like to fish for Whiting and Pompano with shrimp or sand fleas. In the Summer, we're after Flounder with live bait.... mullet minnows, mud minnows or mud diggers. In the Fall, you can catch some big Pompano or Whiting... a lot of Blues and Summer and Winter Trout.... and of course, Spots and Pin Fish. This time of year, when the Spots are in, I'd use Blood worms. GOOD LUCK!"
